I really like how this image shares little vignettes. The two women talking on the left. The mother and daughter on the right. And slightly off-center left stands a Vietnam Veteran who is apparently of the Native American tradition. I think it's just wonderful.
These events were large enough that it was difficult to capture the sense of dynamic energy, except in isolation, subject by subject or person by person. And, I was getting better at walking into the scene to be in the midst of everything. The photos were becoming more "engaged" as I became more part of the "scene." Practicing as a street photographer was an interesting experience.
For this event I used a 120 film format Noblex camera. It had a 50mm lens and a motor-driven module that swiveled the lens, just like early large format panorama/group-photo cameras. It's a rather specialized piece of equipment that can be difficult to work with, but I wish I'd kept it (much like I wish I'd kept at least one of my Rolleiflex TLRs). Kodak TMax400 souped in D76 was still my preferred combination for photography under typical Portland gray skies.
