The rut is under way! Several mature bucks were chasing does this morning.

The culling of the past few winters, moreover, doesn't appear to have been entirely random: there are plenty of mature bucks and does but few of the young and/or stunted deer that used to comprise the bulk of the Valley Forge herd. Or, perhaps, with fewer deer around there's simply enough food for all of them.

Shot just before the rising sun hit this ridge. She was being pursued by the 8-pointer posted earlier and evidently not in the mood for me to tag along.
