Zippy and her clan let me hang out for a while today. She's keeping an eye on her yearling son, who's browsing about 60 ft behind me.

"Zippy" is shedding her winter coat. She's one of the refuge's more recognizable does. She has a huge overbite that makes you wonder how she can feed herself, and she's on the small side; a pronounced roman nose and splotchy skewbald coat complete the homely package. She's also getting on in years and looking fairly bony this spring.

Zippy is doing well. As are the two fawns - a buck and a doe - she had this summer. Keep an eye out for her: she's a distinctively Roman-nosed skewbald and likes to browse in and around the Warbler Wood.

I didn't go looking for deer yesterday, but they showed up anyway. So here's a portrait of one of Zippy's sons, born in 2010. The strapping yearling has little in common with last winter's ball of fluff (shown below.)

I finally got a closer look at Zippy's fawns. The size difference suggests there's a girl and a boy.
