I was deciding whether to pack it in this morning when I heard a sharp call from the edge of the water. It sounded not unlike a green heron, but less hoarse. Curious, I tip-toed forward and caught a glimpse of this least bittern. It's only the second time that I've seen one, so getting a photo was pretty cool. It took off almost right away; perhaps, then, my quick through-the-foliage shot captures this very small heron's elusiveness. It's significantly smaller than a green heron, with stunning golden brown and slate blue plumage.
