Lots of turtles were up and about laying their eggs this morning. Diamondback terrapins are interesting because of their highly varied color schemes: no two individuals look alike. This one's rather drab, albeit blue-eyed.

Which is to say, I was planning to photograph a loon swimming close to shore. It promptly dove out of sight, however. Then I stumbled over this snake on the forest floor, where I joined it for a few moments.

Houston Meadow, Wissahickon

Poking around with writer/herper Billy Brown for a GRID Magazine "Urban Naturalist" column inevitably leads to reptiles of one sort or another!
