I get defensive when I hear people talk crap about the foliage. It's weird. I know. But every year I hear people say things like "not much color this year" or "last year was better!" and I find myself arguing with them. It happens more than you would think.

I've tried to reason through it and I think there's a few reasons people say things like this. First and foremost, I need to admit they are probably right. I have read a bunch of news articles about how climate change is dampening the colors in fall, so they have a point and that breaks my heart.

Second, I think folks are drawing from personal memories, or even photographs, of foliage from past years and they aren't remembering the drab gray fall days. No, they remember the brilliant and faultless colorful days with the leaves burning orange against the bright blue sky. With this year's leaves competing against perfect memories, they don't have a chance.

Third and most improtantly, I think people take the fall foliage - and for that matter the entire natural world - for granted. I think this is why I get defensive about it. The foliage in New England is ridiculous. Every year millions of green trees change all different hues of yellows, oranges, and red and entirely transform the landscape across the region for a month. I feel so lucky to live here and witness it each year. Photography undoubtedly plays some role in my feelings. I have come to think of my camera as a little "gratitude box" that makes me appreciate all of the little things - and in the case of foliage, big incredible things - that I may have otherwise overlooked. So next time you want to complain that the foliage is no good this year, please go take a hike, because I don't want to hear it.

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun…
