Mono Lake's shores are dotted with Tufas, towering columns of limestone that were initially formed under water before the lake level dropped dramatically beginning in 1941, as water was diverted to Southern California. The largest concentration of tufas is along the Southern shore of the lake. Here they form a virtual city of columns, making for a somewhat eerie landscape.

I've just wrapped up a week of vacation with my family. It was incredibly relaxing. Take this photo, for instance. I woke up quite naturally just before sunrise, made a cup of coffee, noting that the light on the lake might be interesting in a little while. I grabbed my tripod, camera bag and coffee, then threw a jacket over my pajamas and walked to the shoreline in my flip flops. Then I waited. My sister wandered down a little later and sat on the nearby picnic table. We chatted and I clicked away as the sun broke over the mountain, casting fetching reflections at our feet. Of course, not all photographs are made this easily, but once in a while it's nice to make a photo while wearing pajamas and sipping coffee.
