Yosemite just received several inches of snow in the last 24 hours, which is not uncommon in the Spring. This image was made last May, and is one of the prints hanging on the walls at the Ansel Adams Gallery. Giant Black Oaks of Yosemite Valley stir in the wind as the seasons change. We are bracing now for a series of storms that will blow the last leaves from these mighty trees and hopefully bring the first serious precipitation of the season to the mountains. Skiing won't be long now.

I spotted this cluster of Aspen trees within a larger scene that included a towering cliff behind the trees, dotted with Fall foliage. The greater scene was beautiful. There were groves of more colorful aspens higher up on the hill. And then there were these trees, completely bare of foliage.
But, the repetitive simplicity of this smaller composition with a charming color palette struck me. I titled this composition “Sentinels” because the Aspens reminded me of soldiers, standing in a line at attention, with blood-red foliage at their feet.
