Museums - The Fan Museum, Greenwich

The Fan Museum, situated in 12 Crooms Lane, Greenwich, LONDON, SE10 8ER was opened in 1991. It is totally dedicated to the display of fans but more importantly to the preservation of them. Housed in two Grade II listed buildings that were erected in 1721. Alongside the museum is a Japanese-style garden, an Orangery decorated with murals, a pond, a parterre (shaped like a fan) and a stream.
The Museum itself owns over 4,000 fans plus ephemera. It has an extensive collection of 18th-19th century fans and its oldest fan is from the 10th century.
Because of the size of the collection, it’s not possible to exhibit all at once so the Museum rotates its collection about three times a year. However there is a permanent educational display, showing the history and manufacture of fans.
The Museum also has an excellent reference library. It not only makes new fans on site but also runs classes in the construction of the fan.
It also provides a conservation unit for not only its own collection but also for members of the general public but also other museums.
Something I didn’t know at the time we visited was that it offered a discount to National Trust members, still in shock about that one and that was six years ago.

This is the last posting.
