My husband and I are returning from a few weeks of bird watching and bird photography in Saskatchewan. Flew from Victoria to Calgary and then drove several thousand kilometers across Saskatchewan. Main locations during the trip were Cypress Hills Provincial Park, Grassland National Park, Chaplin Lake, Moose Jaw and then Brooks on the way back to Calgary. We saw around 150 species of birds and some other wildlife. The count is not precise as we are still trying to ID some varieties of sparrows that were unknown to us. We find sparrows a bit of a challenge. We got reasonable photos of roughly 60% of the species we saw. I am currently buried in photo organizing, sorting, key wording etc... I have not even started post-processing yet :( With several thousands pictures to deal with and another major trip coming up soon, I don’t see the light at the end of the tunnel. So please, excuse my limited involvement in flickr at this point. I will try to find and post some interesting stuff from Saskatchewan and will try to catch up on your postings when exhausted by the various tasks surrounding my shoot in Saskatchewan. This was our first birding trip in Saskatchewan and my first encounter with the Chestnut-collared longspur. I fell in love with it right away!

What can I say.... Snipe will be Snipe... No kidding we have heard them literally everywhere in Iceland. My book says that they are 180,000 pair breeding in Iceland, so a lot less than some other species like the Common Eider (up to 800,000 species) . I just found out that the wonderful sound that they make while in the air and that still hunts me is not a vocal sound. It is is made by the vibration of their outer tails feathers as the bird dives towards ground. You could hear the sound at any time of the day but it is much more difficult to see this extremely shy bird.
