This is my younger daughter playing with our cockatiel and Apso on the bed and I put a flash on the bed and used the optical trigger to fire the flash while sitting on my chair next to the bed.

The idea was to demonstrate to a couple of friends that even a single off-camera flash could achieve nice, candid, results while sitting at home. No diffuser or any other gadget required. Just a DSLR and an external flash.
