Fluidr / cesco.pb's "Camogli" set

L'abbazia di San Fruttuoso di Capodimonte è un edificio religioso situato nella baia omonima a Camogli, nel Golfo Paradiso in provincia di Genova, all'interno del parco terrestre e marino del Monte di Portofino. La chiesa è sede della parrocchia omonima del Vicariato di Recco-Uscio-Camogli dell'arcidiocesi di Genova.

L'abbazia è dedicata a San Fruttuoso, vescovo e santo spagnolo del III secolo d.C., le cui ceneri sono conservate presso l'abbazia, dove sarebbero state traslate a seguito dell'invasione araba della Spagna.

L'abbazia non è raggiungibile da alcuna arteria stradale, ma vi si può accedere soltanto via mare o percorrendo uno scosceso sentiero che scende dal soprastante monte di Portofino che domina il Golfo Paradiso. Vicino all'abbazia si trova una spiaggia balneabile.

Nella sua baia è collocata la celebre statua del Cristo degli abissi, posta nel 1954 sul fondale marino e restaurata negli anni novanta. Dal 1983 l'abbazia fa parte dei beni architettonici del Fondo per l'Ambiente Italiano, grazie alla donazione dei proprietari.

San Fruttuoso - also known as San Fruttuoso di Camogli - is neither port nor resort. Not much more than an indentation along a mountainous coastline, accessible only from the sea or on foot. But it has two powerful attractions. One is an ancient Benedictine monastery and the other the Christ of the Abyss. The monastery is a lovely stone building with a small dome, which straddles the beach. Parts are medieval, some Romanesque, and the burial vaults of the aristocratic Doria family of Genoa are here. Until nature decided to throw up a beach in quite recent times, boats moored directly under the supporting arches of the monastery and could unload directly into the cellars. You can still walk beneath these arches and find the odd boat or two resting on the stones out of the weather. There is some exploring to do at San Fruttuoso, but the main monastery building and the sixteenth-century watch tower a short walk away (combined ticket for a few euros) are not always open: local information offices can supply the details.
