The Top of the World Highway is a 127 km-long (79 mi) mostly gravel highway beginning at a junction with the Taylor Highway near Jack Wade, Alaska. When driving from Alaska the route travels east above the tree line crossing the Canadian border & ending at the Yukon River. The highway and border crossing are only open during the summer months. The portion of the hwy in the Yukon is also known as Yukon Highway 9. The Alaska portion is short and not numbered. The Alaska D.O.T. refers to it as Top of the World Highway. This is a view from the Yukon portion just before a series of switchbacks descend down in elevation to the western bank of the Yukon River where a ferry terminal in West Dawson takes passenger cars to Dawson. The autumn colors arrive very early here and the views were spectacular the entire way.
