The Hawaiian stilt (Himantopus mexicanus knudseni) is an endangered Hawaiian subspecies of the black-necked stilt (H. mexicanus) species. It is a long-legged, slender shorebird with a long, thin beak. Other common names include the Hawaiian black-necked stilt, the ae’o (from a Hawaiian name for the bird and word for stilts), the kukuluae’o (a Hawaiian name for the bird and word for “one standing high”), or it may be referred to as the Hawaiian subspecies of the black-necked stilt.
Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge is valuable for its endangered ae‘o (Hawaiian stilt) and ‘alae ke‘oke‘o (Hawaiian coot), providing nesting, feeding and resting habitat.
Keālia Pond Refuge is a hidden wetland treasure transitioning the urban development and agriculture fields. Here, endangered Hawaiian waterbirds are protected and go about their daily activities, and are joined by migratory birds in winter. Quiet solitude for those that wander and explore the wetlands.
The seasonal conditions that occur at Keālia Pond National Wildlife Refuge make it a notable place to observe Hawai‘i's endangered wetland birds, along with a diversity of feathered visitors from as far away as Alaska and Canada, and occasionally from Asia.

Went to see Peter Stahl Photography today in Wailea, Maui and he showed me his pet. Small pond stocked with fish and two Black-crowned night herons. As they say the Heron loves sushi. Not the greatest capture but a keeper for me. Thank you Peter, you have an awesome pond.
