Taken five years ago. The city fronts the broad Swan River, just out of shot to the right.

With its length of 1841 metres Busselton Jetty is the second longest wooden jetty in the world, the longest being Southend Pier on England's east coast. I'm not a jetty / pier tragic but have seen both of these widely separated structures :-)

Construction commenced in 1853 and it was first used by ships in 1865; it was only 176 metres long at the time. The jetty was regularly extended until the 1960s when its present length was reached and the last commercial ship to use it did so on 17th October 1971.

At its far end is an underwater observatory allowing visitors to view some of the prolific marine life of the area.
