I’m back from the Cayman Islands! I had a great time discovering the islands’ wildlife. One of the highlights was photographing the wonderful Grand Cayman Blue Iguanas. These lizards are critically endangered; in 2003 fewer than 15 animals remained in the wild. However, thanks the efforts of the Blue Iguana Recovery Programme, every year around 100 young iguanas are released back into the wild. I photographed this free-roaming adult male in the Queen Elizabeth II Botanic Park.

Here’s another photo of a Grand Cayman Blue Iguana. This was a particularly blue young male. I just love those beautiful red eyes!

This photograph of a spectacled caiman was taken at night in the Brazilian Pantanal. The caiman was in a small stream waiting for unfortunate fish to pass through its open jaws. We exposed the foreground with a remote flash and then left the shutter open to capture the star trails.

This is a gorgeous little Eyelash pit viper that I found on my recent trip to Costa Rica. In this shot you can clearly see one of its heat sensitive pits between the eye and nose. These pits give the viper a sixth sense which it uses to detect warm-blooded prey. A snake like this can deliver a potentially lethal dose of venom through its large, hypodermic needle-like fangs that are kept folded back against the roof of its mouth. Needless to say, when taking this shot I was careful not to let my warm-blooded fingers get within striking range!
