De son beau-frère, Andrea Mantegna, il apprit à maîtriser parfaitement la perspective. Il élabora une nouvelle typologie iconographique qui consistait à insérer des groupes sacrés dans des paysages sereins où l'humanité et la nature vivent en harmonie. Bellini s'exprime principalement à travers la couleur et la lumière et possède une sensibilité chromatique exceptionnelle qui sera imitée par tous les peintres vénitiens entre le XVe et le XVIe siècle.

A Venise, Giovanni Bellini et Antonello da Messina ont défini un style particulier de Conversation sacrée avec un développement pyramidal centré sur la figure de la Vierge assise sur un trône élevé.
Le peintre place la Vierge au centre d’une chapelle dont l’architecture est inspirée de l’antique. Au-dessus d’elle, la coupole qui couronne la composition est ornée d’une mosaïque d’inspiration byzantine.
