Immature Northern Giant-Petrel, Nelly, Macronectes halli, 90 cm. / 35.4 in. Circumpolar subantarctic, ranges widely through southern oceans and often seen in NZ waters.

South Island Takahe, Notornis, Porphyrio hochstetteri, 63 cm. / 24.8 in. Flightless large rail. VERY RARE ENDEMIC and CRITICALLY ENDANGERED rail of rank grasslands, tussock-land and beech forest. Our guide, Erik Forsyth found this satellite-tagged bird and another individual foraging together. An enormous swamphen-like bird with fewer than 350 remaining (each individual bird has a name).

Salvin's Albatross, Salvin's Mollymawk, Thalassarche salvini, 95 cm. / 37.4 in. Locally COMMON native that breeds mainly at the Bounty Islands, Snares Islands, Crozet Islands and visits NZ coastal waters during breeding.

Flesh-footed Shearwater, Toanui, Ardenna carnipes, 44 cm. / 17.32 in. COMMON native that breeds in western Indian and SW Pacific Oceans, southern Australia, Lord Howe Island, northern NZ and in Cook Strait. Ranges through coastal waters of North Island, occasionally south to Nouveaux Strait and to Chathams in the east.
