Female Plains-wanderer, Pedionomus torquatus, 17 - 19 cm. / 6.69 - 7.48 in. ENDANGERED and RARE. Photographed in the headlights on the plains around 11:15 in the evening. The male averages 2 cm. smaller.

Indigo Macaw, Lear's Macaw, Poet's Parrot, Ara-azul-de-lear, Anodorhynchus leari, 75 cm. / 29.5 in. ENDANGERED. Arid Caatinga (scrub thorn) with Licuri Palm stands. Roosts and breeds on sandstone cliffs. There are about 1500 adults birds remaining in the wild with intensive management efforts of habitat and protection.

Diagnostic Female Golden-winged Warbler, Vermivora chrysoptyera, 4.75 in. / 12.1 cm. NEAR THREATENED. UNCOMMON and declining population in brushy forest habitat with a few tall trees.

Koloa, Hawaiin Duck, Anas wyvilliana, 48 - 50.8 cm. / 19 - 20 in. CRITICALLY ENDANGERED ENDEMIC Hawaiian species. There are problems with hybridization with mallards and loss of suitable habitat. Photographed in April 2009.
