Ridgway's Rail (Light-footed), Rallus obsoletes levipes, 14.5 in. / 36.8 cm. COMMON locally in grassy saltwater and brackish marshes. Handheld. Bird is working a very muddy and brackish area of the marshes.

Black-tailed Native-hen, Tribonyx ventralis, 30 - 38 cm. / 11.8 - 14.96 in. ENDEMIC. Found near water, claypens, lignum swamps and dams.

Takahe, Notornis, Porphyrio hochstetteri, 63 cm / 24.8 in. CRITICALLY ENDANGERED and once presumed extinct. Now intensely managed and has recovered to a population of just over 300 birds. VERY RARE and ENDEMIC A large flightless rail in tussockland and beech forest in mountains. INTRODUCED to Tiritiri Matanga and other predator-free islands.

Red-gartered Coot, Tagua comun, Fulica armillata, 43 - 51 cm / 16.9 - 20.1 in. Marshes, ponds and lakes. The "garters" are just visible underneath the belly on the upper legs.
