Great Black Wasp, Sphex pensylvanicus, 20 - 35 mm / 0.8 - 1.4 in. COMMON and important pollinator, distributed across most of North America, including northern Mexico. Females are larger than males and build an underground nest of several chambers that each house a single larva. Insect prey are brought to the nest and glued to the larvae after being paralyzed by 3 stings. Prey can survive for weeks before being consumed by the larvae.
