Batman and Robin at Lumpy - I was hoping to get one more big alpine climb in before the end of the summer. With my end-of-summer travel schedule Jack and I had one shot. Unfortunately the weather didn't cooperate that weekend. Based on the forecast we opted instead for a climb at Lumpy. It was a good call. We could see storms building on the high peaks as early as 10AM in the Mummy Range. By 12:30 it was raining hard at Lumpy. We were in the car, heading out of the parking lot.
We climbed Batman and Robin, an easy (5.6) classic. The guidebook describes it as 4 pitches, but with a 60m rope we climbed in two. We were, after all, mentally prepared for an alpine day rather than a day at the crag. Luckily we started as early as we did, not for the weather, but for the crowds. The second group on the rock was extremely slow causing at least two other parties to abandon their plans of summiting Batman Pinnacle that day. Heck, we might have been the only ones to summit that day. The second group still had to climb the final crux section when we wandered away from the base. Seeing how slow they climbed the previous section and how soon it started raining, they may have bailed. I got back to Boulder early enough to get a (very) short German lesson from Birgit. Danke, Birgit.
