Rabbit Valley April 2006 - Last weekend Cher, Bill, and I left Boulder Friday afternoon. Tim and Tom left Salt Lake City Friday morning, and we met up in Rabbit Valley late Friday night. Rabbit Valley was about a 4 hour drive for all of us. Tim and Tom had time to ride Friday in Rabbit Valley and importantly secure us a good campsite in Rabbit Valley. It was the Fruita Fat Tire Festival weekend, and we were concerned that it'd be difficult to get campsites in the area. Rabbit Valley is far enough far from Fruita (~17 miles) that it wasn't crowded with bicyclists. Rabbit Valley is quite popular with motorized recreation, but it wasn't so busy to be too annoying. Most of the time we couldn't hear motors..
On Saturday we drove ~8 miles to Mack and rode some of the river loops: Lions, Mary's, Handcuffs, Horsethief Bench, and Troy Built (or at least part of each of these loops). It was way too crowded with bicyclists on Mary's Loop for a short while. We stopped for lunch and weren't annoyed further by the crowds..
On Sunday we rode the spectacular Western Rim Trail in southern Rabbit Valley in Utah. Motorcycles are allowed on that loop, but we didn't see too many. Now the loop is singletrack, but before long the motorcycles will likely enlarge it. That's what's happened with other trails in the area (Parallel Trail #2, e.g.). Tim and Tom headed back to the car and Salt Lake City after finishing the loop while Cher, Bill, and I explored further and got a bit lost..
On Monday the 3 of us searched for the new Zion Curtain Trail that one of the friendly Rabbit Valley rangers had told us about. I think we rode a good chunk of the trail. It's supposed to be a singletrack loop. We found about half of the loop..
Bill drove the whole way home that afternoon. I found out later that Sunday had been a snowy, miserable drive (like our return from White Rim the previous Monday), but this Monday was clear and dry. Good call to skip work Monday!
