Skywalker Couloir June 2006 - On June 3, 2006 Birgit and I headed up from the 4th of July Trailhead to the easy-to-access Skywalker Couloir on South Arapaho. When we got back to the car 6.5 hours later, I checked my self-annotated guidebook to see what month I had climbed this route before. Pretty incredible, the note read: "June 3, 2001 w/ Jack 5.5 hours car to car"..
At the beginning of the day, however, we didn't realize how the cosmos were coming together. We left the trailhead about 5:30 and were shortly passed by two guys heading to the same route. Birgit knew one of them. By the time we could see the entire route we saw that there were already 10 people in front of us. 2 were the ones who passed us, and we could see the other 8 were together. CMC, we guessed. When we passed them later, we found out we guessed right..
From the top of the couloir I looked down and counted more than 20 others on the route (including the CMC group not far behind). Yikes. Quite a busy on Skywalker Couloir. And rightfully so. The snow was perfect. It had been warm a week earlier, but the last few days were cooler, and there had been a good freeze the night before. There was still ice on the trail on our way down all the way to treeline (where there was any moisture). The snow was crampon-perfect: good purchase, but rarely soft enough to kick real steps..
Birgit went home and napped before heading to Petra's birthday party. Later that evening at the SoBo FunFest I was talking to a couple friends. Jack mentioned that he had climbed Queen's Way on Apache that morning. Seth said, "really? I was planning on climbing that today, but we climbed Skywalker instead." I said, "really? You and 25 others. I have photos of you climbing Skywalker this morning!".
And so it goes..
Injury note: though my right knee was more swollen at the end of the day than at the beginning, I was mostly pleased with how it responded to a 7 mile hike which included a 3300' descent. Climbing felt fine. I was glad to have my poles for the descent.
