That's Factory Butte in the background.

San Rafael Swell to Hovenweep October 2007 - Arnaud and I combined a visit to John Salazar's office in Durango with the SUWA Roundup weekend at the Hidden Splendor Mine in the San Rafael Swell. We had planned on leaving on Friday, but we both had busy weeks (mine in DC). Plus the weather forecast was poor for Friday night so we opted to leave Saturday morning instead. Indeed it turned out we didn't miss anything Friday night. Everyone was simply trying to keep camp from blowing away.
The front was followed by cold temperatures. It was cold and windy Saturday night but even that was extremely pleasant compared to Friday. We did miss getting on any of the hikes on Saturday. We decided to head up toward Knotted Rope Canyon before we drove down to camp. A group of about 10 from the Roundup was heading down as we were heading up. They were spread out into groups of 1 or 2. Between Arnaud and me we knew about half the hikers so it took us a little time to get the hike started with all the stops to talk with folks. That was fun though, a big part of why we wanted to come to the Roundup.
Saturday night was a bit of a rushed potluck (because of the wind) and then a long evening by a warm campfire. The weather turned beautiful Sunday in time for most people to head home. It was great to chat with a bunch of people in the pleasant weather that morning. Arnaud and I headed off once again to Knotted Rope Canyon, this time hoping to make it all the way down to Muddy Creek. Steve's directions were perfect, but we didn't like the look of the descent without a rope. Something to go back to.
We headed to Durango around the north end of Lake Powell, by Natural Bridges, through Comb Ridge, and eventually Hovenweep National Monument, a place that neither Arnaud or I had ever been. Our meeting with John Salazar's staff the following morning went well. The trip was a lot of driving for 4 days, but I'm glad we did it.
