Fruita May 2006 - A couple weeks ago I took my third long weekend this spring to go biking in the desert. The other two are Rabbit Valley April 2006 and White Rim April 2006. That makes 10 days pedaling in the desert this spring. Oh, I hope I can manage so much in the fall. It's now too hot to go back this spring.
I drove from Boulder with Mike, and we met Suzanne, Dragos, Dave, Chrisite, and Markus at the campsite in Colorado National Monument on Friday night.
Day 1. The 7 of us rode some of the Lunch loops: Tabeguache Trail to Lunch Loop to Andy's Loop to a very short section of Ribbon Trail to Gunny Loop. We hardly biked any distance. It wasn't the most satisfying mountain biking experience I've ever had.
Day 2. Megan showed up the evening before and joined us for dinner. The 8 of us rode the river loops. After the previous day's umbrella, we were anxious to ride and started off on Mary's Loop fast and strong. Megan was quickly frustrated and left behind. She had rented a bike, and it was her first day on a bicycle with suspension (front or rear). I opted to ride with her so she didn't feel pressure for slowing the group down. Megan and I ended up having a fun day on the river loops and met up with the others a couple of times: on Horsethief Bench loop, at the Handcuffs-Steve's Loop intersection, and again later on Handcuffs loop. This worked because Megan and I rode a couple of the loops in the opposite direction as the others. Megan and I finished with Mary's Loop and Rustlers Loop with the others rode Mack Ridge. The river loops are definitely an area where I could spend more time.
Suzanne and Dragos had to take off early to get back to Boulder. Megan joined us for a Sunday night in Fruita before heading back to Aspen. The rest of played hooky on Monday and spent the day riding.
Day 3. Christie's birthday. Christie, Markus, and Dave opted for a short ride. Mike and I decided to ride the Edge Loop at the Book Cliffs. A great way to end the weekend. It was warm: 93F when we got to Grand Junction at 5PM. I finished the 3.5 liters of water that I brought for our 5.5 hour ride.
