10 Days at Andreas Fall 2008 - After walking off the plane in the late afternoon light on Thursday, I stopped on the tarmac to simply stare up at the mountains that tower above the Coachella Valley. I've seen this view many times, but it's always breathtaking. The San Jacintos rise 8000' in 5 miles, making it one of the steepest escarpments in the 48 states. (I seem to recall reading that it's a 10,000' rise in 4 miles, but I can't find that on the map. It looks to me to take 7 miles to rise 10,000'.)
Michelle and Zane met me at the airport. We went grocery shopping and then headed up the hill for the rest of the 3-day weekend. The highs that weekend were ~35°C, making it wonderful swimming weather. On Saturday Zane and I motivated enough to climb Eagle Peak before it got too hot. Those two drove off Sunday evening after a fun, relaxing weekend.
The following morning I got up early and had one of my longest cycling days ever: Palm Springs to Banning to Idyllwild to Palm Desert and back to Palm Springs. I was so tired on the way back that I somehow rode right by Trader Joe's (without seeing it) where I wanted to stop for groceries. It might have been only my third 100-mile cycling day, and of those three it was the shortest and flattest, but still was close to 110 miles and 9000 ft of climbing. The low and high points of the ride are 6000' different! That's more than the Triple Bypass. Also, as I was warned, the headwind from the tram turnoff to Banning was ferocious. Like everyone else :) I recommend doing this loop clockwise (next time...).
On my rest day I visited the Indian Canyons. Then I got another early start on Wednesday and rode the Palms and Pines Highway from Palm Desert. That's a great climb though the road is narrow in places and there's a fair bit of traffic, even on a weekday. My out and back ride was about 70 miles and ~7000 ft of climbing, enough to make me sleep well.
Mom and Dad arrived that night and dragged me out to dinner at Mirasol in Palm Springs. By the time we headed out, I think I was ready to sleep. The next few days were relaxing, and it was good to meet/see a bunch of folks at the ACC annual meeting.

This old Ritz container, holding the usual summit register, had some unexpected surprises: five one-dollar bills and some family photos folder in a red paper napkin, a prescription drug container wrapped in a metallic blue balloon, and a lighter. The drug container was half-filled with fresh-smelling marijuana and some rolling papers. I read through the summit register and found a number of old entries of my Dad's. He often commented on the wildlife: sheep and deer, typically, but on one trip he found two naked humans, male and female, on the summit.
