Colorado National Monument - Last weekend was the one weekend I had scheduled to ride in the desert this fall. It was a bust. A bunch of folks went, and a few of us got out on a short ride Saturday morning (on the Western Zip trail at the Bookcliffs north of Fruita) before the rain started. Except for Bill and Cher and me, everyone decided to drive home where the weekend weather forecast was better. The 3 of us spent Saturday mostly under a tarp at our fine campsite with good views of the Bookcliffs.
On Sunday we decided it was too muddy to ride the adobe soil of the Boofcliffs. We drove to Loma to ride the river loops, but that seemed too muddy as well. Lots of people were riding, but it seemed bad for the trails and bad for the bicycles as well. We decided to ride the ~34 mile paved loop clockwise through Colorado National Monument. Julie and I rode this loop once before years ago in the opposite direction. It's better clockwise since you get to ride closer to the cliff edge, and there seems to be more miles of downhill (paid for by a steeper climb of course).
