This is my reimagined composition of a refugee shelter in Almere (NL). I loved playing with the rhythmic repetition of identical living units, each personalized by their inhabitants by window dressings and objects in front of the facade. I also kept in the little boy that was playing on the balcony (top left) in a matching orange t-shirt.

Although I digitally superimposed the elements of this composition, this evident artificiality more clearly depicts the image I envisioned when visiting Batavia City, which is an outlet center near Lelystad in the Netherlands. The storefronts of the park are loosely based on historical fishermen’s houses and also the high stone wall surrounding the complex is a nostalgic reference to the past. Putting all elements together in a perfect symmetry, including the cloud above, the graphic clarity of it all gets a surreal level of tidiness which is maybe even more truthful to the reality of Batavia City.

An apartment complex in Almere (Netherlands) inspired me to further explore its musical qualities by repetition and seamless integration. I was drawn towards the building especially because of the striking colors of the window screens and the beautiful ceramic tile pattern that covers most of the walls. Therefore what you see is the original finish of the building transformed into an alternate, enlarged reality that heightens its rhythmic playfulness. I mixed up the order of colour sequences which adds some extra musical variation.
