This African Elephant's genus is Loxodonta which very appropriately is a combination of two Ancient Greek words meaning 'slanting tooth'. Photographed in Chobe National Park, Botswana.

Photographed in Chobe National Park on the Zambezi River in the North of Botswana. It is home to Africa's largest elephant population.
On a cliff face, I had to cling to a tree and shoot with one hand while the guide watched for lions behind me. When he said "enough, come back" I did as I was told.

Impala (Aepyceros melampus). Births generally occur around midday when predators are more likely to be resting rather than hunting. In Chobe National Park, Botswana. Usually a single calf is born which is immediately concealed in cover for the first few weeks of its birth. There were many calves being born in late November at the time of our visit. Of the 32 species of antelope in Southern Africa, impala are the only species to feature the black metatarsal glands above the hoof of the hind legs. It has been proposed that the scent released from this gland may act as a chemical cue for other herd members to follow during a chase. According to Vrba, the impala developed from an alcelaphine ancestor and has continued in its basic form for at least five million years.

The impala is one of the most common and most graceful of all Africa’s antelopes. A slender, agile creature, it can clear formidable obstacles and run at speeds faster than 60km/h. They are fleet runners who can leap up to 10m in length and 3m in height. They use their tremendous speed and agility to avoid predation, and seemingly for pure enjoyment. The name ‘Impala’ comes from the Zulu language meaning ‘gazelle’. Ref: onekindplanet.org/animal/impala/
