CANAAN VALLEY WEST VIRGINIA
The wife and I love to visit the Canaan Valley and nearby Dolly Sods areas of West Virginia to hike and enjoy the scenery. The weather is always a challenge as it can be unpredictable due to its unique microclimate. We try to visit every couple of years during autumn in late September and have done so over the last twelve plus years. In 2023 we came in June to experience the height of the blooming season. Each time we hike the short Blackwater River Trail in Canaan Valley State Park, we have observed the same beaver dam. Multi-generations have maintained this dam and have had a huge impact on the local ecosystem. The endurance of these multi-generational beavers has benefited from the policy of the state of West Virginia not to allow hunting or trapping within the boundaries of its state parks.
