More than 4,000 of this type were ordered 'off the drawing board' ie before a single one had flown.
Big mistake, as it proved - the DH.9 had inferior performance to the DH.4 it replaced. Over the Western Front from late 1917, the DH.9 is generally considered to have been a disaster, as they were much too slow and were shot out of the sky by enemy fighter planes. After the war, fitted with newer engines, the DH.9 seems to have been remarkably successful, serving with no fewer than 25 air arms around the world, and numerous civilian operators. A DH.9 was the first single-engined aircraft to fly from the United Kingdom to Australia. A few remained in use in South Africa until 1937. Not many survive today - this is the only flyable model.
