The undercarriage can be seen retracting into the wings.
This Spitfire is a Mk IX, serial MH434, was built in 1943 and saw extensive service in the War. It is currently painted with the black and white 'Invasion Stripes' that were added to all Allied aircraft just before D-Day, in an attempt to reduce 'friendly fire' incidents. The stripes on this plane are beautifully painted with straight edges, but in 1944, many units had little notice of the order, and the stripes were often hastily applied with a paintbrush and didn't look as neat as these.
