User / BN Singh / A territorial lesson to a Common Tern chick
B.N. Singh / 2,475 items
Although Terns nest in colonies during breeding season they are known to be very territorial birds and act very quickly at chasing strangers away. Here a Common Tern chick from another couple wandered too close to the neighbor’s property. Adult Tern grabbed chick’s beak and gave a push. Probably this chick learned a useful lesson. If you watch nesting terns, sometimes you will see adult tern spreads its wings to show dominance and repeatedly inflicts painful bites to invader chicks with its beak. It is heartbreaking to witness this drama where poor chicks mostly remain low on the ground in a very submissive position.
