Homer is a city in Kenai Peninsula Borough in the state of Alaska with a population 5,922.
Long known as the "Halibut Fishing Capital of the World", Homer is also nicknamed "the end of the road", and more recently, "the cosmic hamlet by the sea”.
For many years Jean Keene fed eagles during the winter months: "The Eagle Lady of Homer Spit." Her house was right on the beach and she received fish waste from a local fish processor, which she would then give to the hundreds of eagles that would show up for their daily feeding. After she passed away this practice of feeding the eagles was stopped and the city council passed a ban on feeding eagles, crows and other birds.
Photographers now come in the sluggish winter season to photograph the eagles.
