L'abbaye bénédictine de St-Sauveur-le-Vicomte fondée au XIe s. fut en grande partie détruite durant la guerre de Cent-Ans et après la Révolution. Elle fut relevée de ses ruines par Ste-Marie-Madeleine Postel qui en fit la maison-mère de sa nouvelle congrégation.
