My first butterfly of the year.

No flowers here yet, but this one found something it needed on the willow catkins.

According to "Alberta Butterflies":

“Adult Milbert’s Tortoise Shells over-winter and are sometimes seen flying as early in February during Chinooks in southern Alberta. These butterflies are strong fliers and frequently hilltop on mountain peaks, far from breeding habitats. This is one of the earliest butterflies to appear in the spring, with capture dates starting from March 13 and extending to October 19. Peak flight activity is in May and June for over-wintering adults and August and November for the newly emerged adults. There are two broods per year”.
