This species is among those that, during migration, sometimes mass in the spring at the south shore of Lake Superior. They have been migrating north and are reluctant to fly out over the 17 miles of open water between there and Canada, a route without protection from predators.
This phone video shows a small fraction of the number of birds that were in the immediate vicinity.

This was one of the most amazing things I've ever witnessed. Captured here (cell phone) is only a small portion of an immense flock of (mostly) Black-vented Shearwaters, Puffinus opisthomelas. The birds standing on the shore are mostly Heermann's Gulls, Larus heermanni. For some reason, small "bait fish" are being found nearer shore than usual as well as are fish eating birds and mammals.
