We had the same driver/guide for our whole visit who was most obliging when it came to stopping to take photos. This is the first place he took us at the start of our tour. Negombo is a town just outside of Colombo which is a popular resort but also a major fishing area. This family were one of several along the beach checking the nets after the men had returned from a fishing trip, Mr Crow was supervising it all

Couldn't believe these guys going out to fish in conditions like this: our guide said that it is forbidden but some people still do - I suppose they are desperate.

There was a lot of fish on the beach which had been put out to dry. In temperatures of 35 degrees, who needs an oven. I think these are cuttlefish. Best viewed large

We only ever saw two cats the whole time we were in Sri Lanka. Anyone else who has been there will know that the place is full of dogs. This tom cat obviously knew his way around the fish market and was sharing the scrapes with one of the many crows that hang around the fish market

One of the main things I wanted to see in Sri Lanka were the elephants in the wild. We visited Minneriya National Park where elephants are known to gather in the afternoon at a watering hole. We saw about fifty there which the guide told us was very lucky as sometimes they do not appear at all. A few of the young bulls were 'fighting' for position and this is one of my favourite shots. This park is near lots of villages and the locals have to contend with elephants turning up in the middle of the night damaging their crops and gardens. I cannot imagine anything more frightening than waking up and having one of these big boys outside your house (which by the way is made of mud, dung and straw!
