My photo entry and accompanying words into the Blue Mountains Cultural Centre portrait exhibition this year.
I recall seeing George for the first time around four years ago as he was sitting quietly by himself in the Cultural Centre cafe. As we started talking I realised there was something really intriguing about him. Over time I found out more about his truly remarkable life. George is a refugee from Poland, a holocaust survivor and someone who I just had to photograph someday…
Upon retiring as a very successful engineer in 1995, George has been a tireless volunteer and advocate for refugees and asylum seekers with the Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group (BMRSG). He has been able to draw upon his own early harrowing life experiences to help those who are in need. George Winston and the BMRSG have help many over time. George is the secretary of the BMRSG.
Four years later as I photograph George amongst the resilient Australian bush, I couldn’t but help see the similarities of the growth and adaptations that are needed in order to survive and flourish. As the wildflowers blossom freely amid the dead wood and debris, George‘s confidence and gracious demeanor becomes apparent across his face, as the last of the days golden light shines upon him.
