It's been a while since I've set out to photograph wildlife, but I got a new lens before I started my long drive to Arkansas, so I decided to spend some time at New Mexico's Bosque Del Apache Wildlife Refuge. It's a cool place (12 degrees just before sunrise).

I recently got a telephoto lens, and I'd really missed not having one since I made the switch to mirrorless about 18 months ago. Since I had the lens and it was wintertime, I decided to finally go to New Mexico's Bosque Del Apache Wildlife Refuge. There are a lot of geese and cranes there, but I preferred the familial takeoff from one pond that the cranes use over the chaotic takeoff of all the geese at another pond.

Do y'all remember, Smarty Jones, the horse that everybody was talking about back in 2004? This is him winning the Arkansas Derby in Hot Springs, Arkansas, a few weeks before he went on to win the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. It was the only horse race that I ever photographed, but I picked a good one.
