I don't know if they're doing it where you are, but some of my friends in Reno are participating in a black and white photography challenge where those nominated are to post a black & white image and nominate someone else every day. Anyway, I was just nominated, and this was the first one that I worked up. It's from California's Bodie State Park, probably the best preserved old west ghost town that exists.

For my second day of participation in the five day black & white photography challenge, I decided to use an image from a couple winters ago that I made at the famous old church on the south side of Taos, New Mexico. I'm flying to Albuquerque on Wednesday to celebrate my 40th birthday on Saturday, so I've enjoyed getting myself pumped up about it by looking at some of my older images from the Land of Enchantment.

Okay, for my final black & white challenge image, I wanted to post a photo of The Wave that's really special to me. Only twenty people are allowed to visit this spot a day, and there is a permit system where ten people receive their permits online, and the other ten get them through a daily drawing at the headquarters of a ranger station in Southern Utah. I showed up on a Friday, trying to get a permit for the following Saturday, and they drew my lotto ball second out of over 100 entries. I flipped out in jubilation, especially since I ditched going to the graduation ceremony for my master's degree to take this chance.

Today I learned that I'll be teaching my Intro to Digital Photography class in Carson City instead of Reno, and I am really excited about it, even though it's going to require a little more driving. This evening, that got me thinking about about Carson City, and I realized that I only have one halfway decent photo of the town. My friend, Michelle Beaty, who grew up there but unfortunately passed away a few years ago, gave me directions to this spot that's up in the hills to the west of town. Her directions were part of a long list of all the town's best photo opportunities that she emailed me in early 2012. Since I'll be going there more often, I printed out her email and have it in my Nevada Gazeteer map book, and I think I'm going to try to cover every one of her recommendations. The ending of the email is classic Michelle, and those who knew her will surely understand: "I’m sure I’d get us arrested or in some kind of big fat trouble if I were running the photo choices. That’s why you professionals do what you do - partly. Happy Shooting..."
