Las Vegas may seem to always be trying to one-up itself, but I think that the MSG Sphere is going to be the coolest spot in the city for a while.

I've already been planning an itinerary for an epic summer backpacking trip and felt like posting this image from this past summer on the John Muir Trail. It was my all time favorite hike of my life. The Sierra is unbeatable as far as I'm concerned, but it looks like a backcountry hike in the Rockies will be my big hike of next summer.
“Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop away from you like the leaves of Autumn.”

According to one of my favorite magazines, Arizona Highways, today is World Photography Day, so I felt like I needed to post another new image from my John Muir Trail hike. This one is of Rae Lakes. Like yesterday's photo of Thousand Island Lake, it is one of the two locations along the JMT that I camped at last year during my five backpacking trips in the Sierra Nevada. The light was much more dramatic this year around the middle of July.

Backpacking California's John Muir Trail was the most physically demanding thing that I've ever done, and it was worth every single bit of effort given. For 25 nights, my home was the Sierra Nevada, coined by John Muir as "The Range of Light." The days were fairly simple: get over the mountain passes before afternoon thunderstorms, make sure to always have access to water, keep all edible items in a bear can, and keep hiking northbound.

Northwest New Mexico is one of my favorite places for photography, and I have been venturing through locations like this one for over twenty years. These locations are like walking through a Star Trek movie set, but those who are exploring the area need to be a bit skilled at off-trail navigation because there are not any trails. I have been using the Gaia GPS phone app lately, and it works very well, even if my phone is in airplane mode.
