In the very centre of Plymouth, Sutton Harbour was where many explorers embarked from, including the Pilgrim Fathers. The Barbican overlooks the harbour, and is the oldest part of the city. It has a number of medieval buildings as well as several pubs and restaurants.

This elderly crane is a feature of the old harbourside at Plymouth, from which many famous ships departed, including the Mayflower. Plymouth was originally known as Sutton, and this is part of Sutton harbour.

This Tudor house is in New Street in The Barbican, Plymouth, and dates from 1599. It is opposite another very old house which is now a museum. New Street itself dates from 1584, and was originally where richer merchants came to live. But by the 19th century much of it had degenerated into slums.
