At low tide the inner harbour virtually empties out to leave the fishing boats stranded on the mud.

The outer harbour at Mevagissey on the south coast of Cornwall dates from the end of the 19th century though the inner harbour dates back to medieval times. A small power station, with the generators powered by pilchard oil, was built in the 1890s and this supplied electricity for the town's roads and for the small lighthouse at the end of the harbour. There is a similar lighthouse at St Ives.

The beautiful traditional fishing village of Mevagissey is on the south coast of Cornwall. There are two harbours - an inner one that dates from the 18th century and an outer one (pictured) that dates from the end of the 19th century. Mevagissey is home to the second largest fleet of fishing boats in Cornwall.
