The large container port of Felixstowe can be seen in the distance as this schooner sails north along the Suffolk coast.

There is a lovely sandy beach at Southwold, though the local coastline is subject to erosion. Southwold Pier is in the background.

We had a very pleasant day in Suffolk yesterday, and on the way over passed the wonderful post mill at Saxtead Green.
Saxtead Green Mill dates back to at least 1796 when the miller was Amos Webber. In 1810, the Mill House was built for Robert Holmes. The mill was raised a total of three times during its working life. The mill was tailwinded in 1853. As a result of this, the mill was completely rebuilt in 1854 by Whitmore and Binyon, the Wickham Market millwrights. New cast iron machinery was fitted, and the layout of the machinery changed from Head and Tail to Breast stones. It was in this year that the mill was raised for the third time.
Collins, the Melton millwright worked on the mill in the 1870s and Whitmore and Binyon again worked on the mill in the 1890s. From 1926 millwright Jesse Wightman was responsible for repairs until the mill ceased working commercially on the death of the last miller in 1947. The mill is now in the care of English Heritage.

This is the beautiful little market town of Framlingham in the middle of the Suffolk countryside. The town has Anglo-Saxon origins and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It has a number of independent shops and eateries, plus a wonderful; medieval castle which is currently being refurbished by English Heritage. Judy loved the little town and almost literally had to be dragged away, subject to a promise from me to take her back and let her spend more time there.

Judy and I had lunch at one of our very favourite places yesterday - the Company Shed on Mersea Island in Essex. Afterwards we had a short walk north along the coast road, past the few houses and the yacht club (seen on the left), and looked back across the Strood Channel towards the River Blackwater. This part of the Essex coast has many mud flats, creeks and inlets, and is a firm favourite with sailors.
