Prior to the 1960s, Benidorm was a small village. Today it stands out for its hotel industry, beaches and skyscrapers, built as a result of its tourist-oriented economy. According to the 2010 census, Benidorm has a permanent population of 71,198 inhabitants, ranking as the fifth most populous town in the Alicante province. Due to the unique skyline formed by its numerous tall hotels and apartment buildings it is sometimes referred to as the "Manhattan of Spain" or "Beniyork", which is unlike any other on the Costa Blanca (White Coast). According to the Urban Age project, Benidorm has the most high-rise buildings per capita in the world.

We stayed in Albir for a fortnight at the end of February, 2014, and this enabled us to visit much of the Costa Blanca on Spain's south-east coast. Albir is just a few miles north of Benidorm, and is a delightful (and somewhat quieter!) resort. The mountain range in the distance, beyond Altea, is the Serra de Bernia, and the highest peak is over 3,600 feet above sea level.

For many people, Alicante is simply the airport on the way to Benidorm. But it is actually a very large city with a number of beautiful sandy beaches, a delightful old city centre with numerous restaurants and bars, and a very large port with an adjacent marina.

Moraira is a beautiful seaside town on the northern part of the Costa Blanca, just to the south of Cap de la Nau. Like several other towns along this beautiful coast, there is a marina which is home to numerous yachts and motor boats. In the distance can be seen the town of Calpe and the famous Northern Rock (Penyal d'Ifac - a massive limestone outcrop over 1,000 feet high), which is the Costa Blanca's equivalent of the Rock of Gibraltar.
