The beautiful small town of Sedbergh, historically in the West Riding of Yorkshire but now in the ceremonial county of Cumbria, lies about 10 miles east of Kendal, 28 miles north of Lancaster and about 10 miles north of Kirkby Lonsdale. It is just within the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Sedbergh's traditional industries were farming and production of woollen garments. Sedbergh School was originally founded in 1525 and is one of the country's leading public schools.
Sedbergh is England's official book town (like Hay-on-Wye in Wales and Wigtown in Scotland). Though smaller than these, it has several independent bookshops and dealers.
The cream-painted house with the railings just left of centre is Grade II-listed (as are numerous other buildings in Sedbergh) and dates from the mid-1700s.

Barbondale meets Dentdale at Gawthrop, about a mile or so from the pretty little village of Dent. Years ago, this beautiful countryside was part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, but it was transferred to Cumbria in the 1974 boundary changes. Despite this, both Dentdale and Barbondale remain part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Dentdale is a beautiful dale or valley in the north-west of the Yorkshire Dales National Park in Cumbria. Historically it was in the West Riding of Yorkshire until boundary changes in the mid-1970s. The dale is the valley of the River Dee, but takes its name from the village of Dent. The dale runs east to west starting at Dent Head, which is the location of a railway viaduct on the Settle-Carlisle Line, and ending near Sedbergh.

Dentdale was once part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, but since 1974 has been part of Cumbria. However, it is still within the boundaries of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
I think it is one of the prettiest dales with rich farmland at the bottom of the dale where the River Dee flows through it. The dale is named after its main settlement, the village of Dent, rather than - as in a number of cases - the river. This is the north-western end of the dale, near the town of Sedbergh.
This is for Judy. She likes wooden farm gates!

On our week's holiday in the Yorkshire Dales we stayed in Littondale, which branches off from Wharfedale. Early one morning I decided to venture up over the top towards Malham and Settle, but decided to go no further when I discovered this bank of low cloud covering the mountain tops. Cowside Beck is down in the valley on the left.
