This delightful Grade II-listed Quaker Meeting House (effectively a small church) with its tiny cemetery is on the north side of Wellingborough's town centre. It has a datestone of 1819. The Quakers are also known as the Society of Friends.

The Grade II-listed Hardwater Mill is just to the west of Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, on the River Nene. The buildings date from the mid-1700s to the early 1800s, though there has been a watermill on this site since the time of the Domesday Book. Milling ceased in 1946 and it is now a private residence.

The Hind Hotel is in the very centre of the town of Wellingborough, at the side of Sheep Street and facing Market Street (seen in the background) and the market. It is Grade II*-listed and dates from 1645. This is the north side of the building where the carriage entrance to the courtyard was constructed in 1891.

This is the valley of the River Nene, the main river in Northamptonshire and one of the slowest flowing in the country. This was taken near Hardwater Crossing, and is a couple of miles to the south of Wellingborough where the River Nene splits into several streams and meanders through a wide flood plain. This part of the Nene Valley has been heavily used for gravel extraction, and some of the resulting lakes have been converted into country parks or water sports centres

We moved from the suburbs of London to Northamptonshire 50 years ago in July, and it was the best thing we ever did. Our family has grown up here, and all four of our children have families of their own. Both boys now have grandchildren, which sometimes makes me feel rather ancient!

Initially we moved to the town of Wellingborough, primarly because of the relatively low cost of housing combined with an excellent fast train service to London, where I continued to work. After I retired I moved a few miles to the village of Isham. My younger son now has my first house in the village, while my wife, Judy, and I live in an ancient (1668) cottage, which was once part of a farm in the village.

On the left is part of the churchyard, while the large thatched cottage was originally three separate small ones. Dating from the late 1600s, it is Grade II-listed. Finally, I must mention the red telephone box. It is the only one I have come across for a long time that still has a working telephone. It is perhaps ironic that this picture was taken with a cameraphone.
