Kingsand and its adjacent former fishing village of Cawsand are on the Rame Peninsula in the far south-east of Cornwall, where they overlook Plymouth Sound. The Devon coast can be seen on the other side. This is a relatively quiet though very attractive part of Cornwall, with the vast majority of visitors driving past to the holiday resorts further to the west. It is one of our favourite places.

The houses overlooking the sea wall can get battered in the winter gales, hence the shutters on some of the windows. Several cottages also have flood protectors on the bottoms of the doors. This seafront lane is called The Cleave. Many of the buildings along here date from the mid-18th century.

In the distance is Plymouth and beyond it we can just see the outline of Dartmoor.

These two brave ladies were wise enough to stay just within the old harbour at Portwrinkle, on the edge of Cornwall's Whitsand Bay, and avoid swimming in these stormy seas. Many years ago Portwrinkle was an important centre for pilchard fishing, but the old fish cellars in the village have now been converted into residences. The ancient harbour is just used occasionally by small boats and canoes. Looe and Looe Island are in the far distance while Shag Rock in the centre is to the east of the coastal village of Downderry.

West Looe and East Looe, which sit on opposite banks of the Looe River, used to be separate towns. They joined together to become the town of Looe over 100 years ago, but they are still known by their old names. Looe is a beautiful little seaside resort on the south-east coast of Cornwall. About half a mile off the coast is Looe Island, which these days is a nature reserve. A small fleet of glass-bottomed boats, several of which are seen on the right of the picture, takes visitors out to explore the undersea life around it.

Portwrinkle is a small village on the south-east Cornish coast in Whitsand Bay. In the early 1600s a pilchard storing and processing works was built at Portwrinkle and the small harbour, part of which is seen here, was built shortly afterwards. The former Port Wrickell was one of many places in Cornwall that was important for pilchard fishing. The pilchards would have been salted and exported in barrels as far as Mediterranean countries.

The Looe River splits into two branches just north of the bridge in Looe in south-east Cornwall. The East Looe River has its sources in the hills just to the south of Liskeard while the West Looe River, seen here, has its sources in several streams that run through steeply wooded valleys just a little further to the west. It then flows south past Herodsfoot, Churchbridge and Watergate before meeting the East Looe River almost opposite Looe's railway station, which is on the east bank of the Looe River. Spot the cormorant!
